# Kenmore dishwashers

### Mostly Whirlpool under the badge

Most of the Kenmore dishwashers we are called out to in South Florida are Whirlpool-built and carry 665 on the plate, with Frigidaire-built 587 units and Bosch-built 630 units behind them. That is good news for a repair: Whirlpool publishes a code scheme and stocks parts in volume, so these are among the more straightforward appliances on this badge to diagnose and to source for.

### Why the code page names the builder

Because the code belongs to the builder. Different manufacturers use overlapping characters for unrelated conditions, and a code read against the wrong table is worse than no code at all — it is a confident answer pointing at the wrong component. Every code page on this site says which maker’s table it came from and where that table is published.

### What actually goes wrong here

Drainage and wash performance, in that order, and a large share of both end at the filter, the drain path or the water temperature rather than at a component. Hard water is the local factor: it scales heaters, clouds glassware and makes a machine look like it has stopped cleaning when the machine is fine.

### Before you book

Clean the filter, run the disposer, and check whether the drain hose rises above the level of the door. If the problem survives all three, tell us the model number and the code, and we will tell you what it usually turns out to be.

Drainage and wash performance, in that order, and a large share of both end at the filter, the drain path or the water temperature rather than at a component. Hard water is the local factor: it scales heaters, clouds glassware and makes a machine look like it has stopped cleaning when the machine is fine.

### There is standing water in the bottom after a cycle.

A small amount in the sump is normal on many machines and is there to keep the seal wet. Water above the filter after a completed cycle is not. The order we work through is the filter, then the drain hose and the air gap or high loop, then the disposer plug if the drain was ever connected to a new disposer, and then the pump. The disposer plug is worth checking yourself: a knockout left in place after an install is a surprisingly common cause and costs nothing to look at.

### It runs but nothing comes out clean.

Water temperature, then the spray arms, then the filter. Dishes that come out gritty usually point at a filter that has not been cleaned, and dishes that come out with a film point at water and detergent rather than at the machine. On this water a rinse aid does more than people expect. Where it really is the machine, it is commonly the wash pump or a blocked arm rather than anything expensive.

### It shows a code. Is that a Kenmore code?

No — it is the code of whoever built it. On a 665 dishwasher that is Whirlpool, and the meaning is in Whirlpool's own material. This is why our code pages name the builder on every page: reading a code against the wrong maker's table sends you to the wrong part, and they overlap enough to be convincing.
