# Does a Kenmore Refrigerator Have a Reset Button? What Each Builder Gives You

## Does my Kenmore refrigerator have a reset button? Not one — a ladder

The honest answer to the question is no, and the useful answer is that there are four separate things people mean by it, they differ in strength, and using the strongest one first is a habit worth breaking.

Nothing on this list is specific to the badge. These cabinets were built by LG, Whirlpool, Frigidaire and GE, and none of those companies fits a reset button to a domestic refrigerator. What each of them does provide is a set of controls, and a couple of settings that look alarmingly like failures.

## First: is it a setting rather than a problem?

Two of these are common enough that they belong at the top of the page.

**Demo or showroom mode.** Frigidaire-built cabinets show 77 77, and the manufacturer's own description is a mode designed for a display set up in a store, without using the functional components. Everything lights up. Nothing cools. It is not broken and no reset will help, because there is nothing to reset — it is doing what it was told.

**Cooling off.** Whirlpool-built cabinets have a setting that turns the cooling function off while leaving the appliance awake, and the display says so.

Both survive being unplugged. Both are cleared at the panel. Between them they account for a good share of the refrigerators people are ready to condemn.

## The four rungs, mildest first

**Acknowledge the alarm.** A door alarm, a high-temperature warning or a power-failure indicator is a record of something that already happened. On several of these cabinets the controls remain disabled while the indicator is showing, so a panel that ignores you is often a panel waiting to be acknowledged rather than a dead board.

**Reset the filter counter.** The filter light counts months, not water. Fitting a new cartridge does not clear it — holding the button does.

**Cooling off, then on.** On models with the control, this restarts the cooling function without cutting power to anything else. It is the mildest reset that is genuinely a reset.

**Power off at the breaker for about five minutes.** This clears volatile stored state, which is what people are actually after when they ask about a reset button. Wait the five minutes: an immediate restart asks the compressor to start against pressure that has not equalized, and doing that repeatedly is how a healthy compressor is damaged.

Stop at whichever rung makes the appliance behave. Nothing is gained by going further.

## What a reset can never do

It cannot make a blocked condenser shed heat. It cannot reseal a hardened door gasket. It cannot restart a fan that has stopped turning, or clear a defrost circuit that never completes.

Those are conditions rather than states, and the way you find out is simple: if the code or the behavior returns on the next cycle, it was never a state. That is worth doing before you call, because "it comes back within the hour" tells us more than an hour of questions would.

## And afterwards, give it time

A refrigerator that has been off or warm does not recover in minutes. The freezer comes back first, the fresh-food compartment follows, and the whole cabinet can take most of a day to settle if it was fully warm.

Measure it properly before deciding it has not worked: a glass of water left in the compartment overnight, then a thermometer in the water. Everything else is a guess about how cold a milk carton feels.
