# Kenmore frost building up in the freezer

### Look at where the frost is

An even light coating over everything, worst near the door, is air getting in — a seal, or a door that is not closing square. A solid slab on the back wall behind the shelves, with the rest of the cabinet fairly clear, is the defrost circuit. They are different repairs and the pattern tells you which before anybody opens anything.

### What it usually means, by the company that built it

Kenmore manufactures nothing, so the same behavior points at different things depending on who made the appliance. The three digits before the period on the rating plate are what tells them apart.

- **253 Frigidaire** — Standalone Frigidaire-built freezers, upright and chest. Chest units have no defrost circuit at all and the scraper came in the box.
- **106 Whirlpool** — Whirlpool-built uprights with automatic defrost, where the heater and its thermostat are the usual finding.

### Frost is water that got in

Every scrap of ice inside a freezer arrived as humidity, and in South Florida there is a great deal of humidity to arrive. That is why frost problems here run ahead of the schedule the manual assumes, and why a door seal on a garage freezer is worth more attention than one on a kitchen refrigerator.

### Why a defrost repair starts with the door

Because a defrost circuit that failed under normal load and one that failed while working twice as hard are two different stories, and only one of them is finished when the heater is replaced. We check the seal in the same visit for that reason.

It is a manual-defrost cabinet

Chest freezers and some older uprights have no defrost circuit. The frost is expected and defrosting it once or twice a year is the maintenance.

The door seal

Warm humid air in, frost out. Here that happens faster than the manual expects.

The defrost heater or its thermostat

On an automatic cabinet, the usual answer for a slab on the back wall.

The door is not closing square

A cabinet out of level, a hinge that has dropped, or a shelf holding the door open a fraction.

Chest or upright, manual or automatic

The manual will say. It decides whether there is a problem at all.

Is the frost even or in one place

Even is air. A slab in one place is defrost.

Does the door close by itself from an inch open

If not, level and hinge come before anything electrical.

Is it in a garage or a porch

Every door opening in unconditioned air brings in far more moisture than one in a kitchen.

More ice than there should be, and it keeps coming back

What it usually means

On a chest freezer this is normal

On an automatic-defrost cabinet it is not

Where the frost sits tells you which problem it is

### It is a chest freezer and there is frost everywhere.

That is normal and it is what the scraper is for. Defrost it fully once or twice a year and it will run better and cheaper.

### How much frost is too much?

On an automatic cabinet, any solid ice that comes back within weeks of being cleared. On a manual one, enough that it is eating your storage space.
