# Kenmore refrigerator leaking water

### Inside or outside — decide that first

Water in the bottom of the fresh food compartment or under the crispers is almost always the defrost drain. Water on the floor at the front is a door problem or a dispenser line. Water at the back is the drain pan or the supply connection. Those three point at three different repairs and it takes a moment to tell which you have.

### What it usually means, by the company that built it

Kenmore manufactures nothing, so the same behavior points at different things depending on who made the appliance. The three digits before the period on the rating plate are what tells them apart.

- **106 Whirlpool** — The defrost drain, which runs from the evaporator to a pan under the cabinet and blocks with debris and ice.
- **795 LG** — Same drain story, plus the water line to the dispenser in the door.
- **253 Frigidaire** — The drain, and on units with a through-door dispenser, the line and the reservoir behind the liner.

### Why the drain blocks here in particular

A defrost drain is a small tube that has to carry meltwater every cycle. In a humid house there is more meltwater, and more of it means more of whatever it carries with it settling in the tube. Then a little ice forms in the narrowed passage and the next cycle has nowhere to go. It is a maintenance problem more than a failure, and clearing it properly is a short job.

### Condensation is not a defect

On a garage or patio installation, or in a house that runs its air conditioning warm, water on the outside of a cold cabinet is physics rather than a defect in the appliance. We will say so if that is what we find, because paying for a repair that cannot change the weather helps nobody.

The defrost drain is blocked

Every defrost cycle produces meltwater that needs a way out. Block the route and it ends up inside the cabinet instead.

A door that has stopped sealing

Warm wet air in, condensation out. In this climate a marginal seal produces a surprising amount of water.

The water supply line or the inlet valve

Usually at the back, usually at a connection, and usually worse over time.

The drain pan

Cracked, dislodged, or simply overwhelmed by a cabinet doing more defrosting than it should be.

Where exactly is the water

Under the crispers, at the front on the floor, or at the back. Three different answers.

Is there ice under the crisper drawers

A sheet of ice there is the defrost drain, almost every time.

Does a dollar bill pull out easily from the closed door

Try it at intervals along all four sides. Wherever the bill pulls away without resistance, that stretch of gasket is doing nothing.

Is it worse after a hot humid day

Condensation follows the weather. A genuine plumbing leak does not.

Water in the crisper, or on the floor

What it usually means

Water inside and water outside are different problems

A blocked defrost drain is the commonest cause

In this climate condensation is a real answer

### There is a sheet of ice under the drawers.

That is the defrost drain. Clearing it is straightforward and it will come back if the cause of the extra meltwater is not addressed too.

### It only leaks sometimes.

Intermittent points at defrost cycles or at the weather rather than at a plumbing connection, which leaks steadily.
