# Kenmore refrigerator not cooling

### The two checks that cost nothing

Look for a setting before you look for a part. Whirlpool-built cabinets have a cooling-off mode and Frigidaire-built ones have a demonstration mode, and both leave a refrigerator looking perfectly healthy and doing no refrigeration at all. Then look at the load: a cabinet packed to the back wall blocks the vents the cold comes out of, and that misses temperature with nothing broken.

### What it usually means, by the company that built it

Kenmore manufactures nothing, so the same behavior points at different things depending on who made the appliance. The three digits before the period on the rating plate are what tells them apart.

- **106 Whirlpool** — The defrost circuit is where a slow warm-up most often ends here. It presents as the fresh food side drifting up over days while the freezer stays passable. Whirlpool also has a COOLING OFF setting that turns the refrigeration off deliberately, and it is worth ruling out first.
- **795 LG** — This cabinet moves its cold with a fan, so a fan or a sensor problem is the first suspect and LG usually names it on the display. Er FF and Er rF are the two to look for.
- **253 Frigidaire** — Look for HI blinking on the temperature display, and for 77 77, which is demonstration mode — the panel works and the cabinet does not cool, on purpose.

### Why we ask for the model number before anything else

Because on this badge it is the diagnosis sequence rather than a formality. A Whirlpool-built cabinet, a Frigidaire-built one and an LG-built one have different evaporator layouts, different defrost strategies and different amounts they are willing to tell you on the display. A technician who arrives without the number is working on three appliances at once.

### What South Florida adds to this

Humidity. Every hour a tired door seal lets damp warm air in, the defrost circuit has more ice to clear than it was sized for, and it is doing that in a house where the air is wet nine months of the year. That is why a not-cooling call here so often ends at defrost rather than at the compressor, and why a door seal is preventive work rather than cosmetic.

### The part nobody expects

A genuine share of these calls end at a setting. Whirlpool publishes COOLING OFF and Frigidaire publishes 77 77 for demonstration mode, and both produce a refrigerator that lights up, responds to every button and does no cooling whatsoever. It is worth thirty seconds of your time before it is worth a diagnostic fee.

A mode rather than a failure

Cooling off on a Whirlpool-built cabinet, demonstration mode on a Frigidaire-built one. Costs nothing to check and it is a genuine answer.

Airflow inside the cabinet

Vents blocked by a box or shelves loaded solid to the back. The compressor runs perfectly and the food is still warm.

The condenser

Dust, pet hair and salt air on the coil until it can no longer shed heat. Extremely common here and cheap to correct.

The defrost circuit

Ice on the evaporator that never clears, so air stops moving through it. On a 106 this is the usual ending.

A fan or a temperature sensor

On a 795 the fan is how the cold gets anywhere, and LG names the problem on the display rather than leaving you to guess.

The sealed system

Real, expensive, and quoted far more often than it happens. Everything above is ruled out first.

Read the first three digits

On the sticker inside the fresh food compartment. 106 is a Whirlpool, 253 is a Frigidaire, 795 is an LG, 363 is a GE. It changes the order of everything below.

Look for a mode on the display

COOLING OFF, 77 77, or a demonstration mode. All three mean nothing is broken.

Put a thermometer in the cabinet

Rather than trusting the panel. Two degrees out and ten degrees out are different problems.

Feel the back of the cabinet

Warm is normal. Cold, with a compressor that is running, is a finding.

Everything works except the cold

What it usually means

Three builders, three first suspects

Two settings account for a real share of these

The sealed system is last, not first

### It has never been cold since we bought it as a floor model.

Check for demonstration mode. Floor models are put into it on purpose so they light up without running the refrigeration, and it does not always get turned off before delivery.

### The freezer is fine and the fridge is warm.

That pattern points at airflow or defrost rather than at the compressor, because the cold is being made and is not arriving. It is usually one of the cheaper answers.

### How long can I leave it before it is a problem?

Keep the doors shut and move what matters to a cooler. A cabinet that is drifting up is not an emergency, but a freezer full of food that has thawed once should not be refrozen.
