What we can confirm

Code Flashing F, from the manufacturer's own documentation

A code is only meaningful together with the machine showing it — the same digits mean different things on different equipment.

Flashing F

Whirlpool publishes the fact that an F is flashing and, on the F-code pages behind it, does not publish what each one means. We are not going to invent them. What the letter tells you is that the cabinet has logged something and it needs reading at the appliance.

What it looks like from the kitchen

A code names the subsystem; the symptom is what sent you to look at the display in the first place. That page says what it usually turns out to be, cheapest cause first.

One half working and the other not

    Refrigerator warm and freezer cold

A specific and useful symptom, because it says the cold is being made and is not getting where it needs to go. That rules out most of the expensive answers before anybody opens anything, and it points at a short list that is the same on every builder.

    • The cold is being made — it is not arriving
    • Rules out the sealed system almost immediately
    • Usually defrost, a fan, or a damper

What else belongs to the refrigerators

On this make a code belongs to the appliance rather than to a product line. These are the other conditions this machine can display, and the models that can show this one — a display often has more than one thing to say, and the model number decides what any of it costs to put right.

About Whirlpool-built Kenmore refrigerator error code Flashing F

Whose code this actually is

Kenmore did not write Flashing F, because Kenmore has never built an appliance. This one is Whirlpool's, and it appears on the refrigerator that Whirlpool built and Sears sold under the Kenmore badge. Four different manufacturers built refrigerators under this badge, and several of them use an F with a number for unrelated conditions. That is the single most convincing way to reach the wrong component.

What it means

Whirlpool publishes the fact that an F is flashing and, on the F-code pages behind it, does not publish what each one means. We are not going to invent them. What the letter tells you is that the cabinet has logged something and it needs reading at the appliance.

Which Kenmore models can raise it

The Kenmore refrigerator whose model number begins 106 — the three digits before the period on the rating plate. Those digits are Whirlpool's, which is why Whirlpool's table is the one that applies to Flashing F and no other manufacturer's does.

What happens next

  1. Try a full power cycle — Whirlpool's own instruction, and it clears a genuine one-off.
  2. Photograph the display, including the digits after the F, before you clear it. That is the one piece of evidence that disappears.
  3. The meaning has to be read at the appliance against service documentation, and that is what a diagnostic visit is for.

Where this usually goes

The job this most often becomes is diagnostic visit, and that page carries a starting figure and the reasons that move it. A Kenmore refrigerator in this humidity hands its defrost circuit more work than it was sized for, and in a Miami kitchen a floor-level condenser blocks well ahead of any published interval. Photograph the display before you cut the power: a reset clears Flashing F, and on a Kenmore the characters plus three digits off the plate are most of the diagnosis.

Where this meaning came from

Whirlpool's own documentation: Refrigerator display and indicator guide — Whirlpool Product Help. Kenmore publishes none of its own, which is why every entry on this site names the manufacturer's document instead.
