Frigidaire-built Kenmore refrigerator error code HI

Frigidaire wrote this code, not Kenmore. On a refrigerator wearing this badge, HI means: Frigidaire's own wording: HI blinking on the temperature display means the temperature in that compartment is too high. Which model prefixes can raise it, and what to do

What we can confirm

Code HI, from the manufacturer's own documentation

A code is only meaningful together with the machine showing it — the same digits mean different things on different equipment.

What it looks like from the kitchen

A code names the subsystem; the symptom is what sent you to look at the display in the first place. That page says what it usually turns out to be, cheapest cause first.

  • A household thermometer on a shelf in a lit refrigerator — the symptom, not the machine.
    Everything works except the cold

    Refrigerator not cooling

The call we take more often than any other, and on this badge the one where the number on the sticker changes the answer most. Three different manufacturers built the Kenmore refrigerators in South Florida kitchens, and they arrive at a warm cabinet by different routes and report it in different words.

    • Three builders, three first suspects
    • Two settings account for a real share of these
    • The sealed system is last, not first

What else belongs to the refrigerators

On this make a code belongs to the appliance rather than to a product line. These are the other conditions this machine can display, and the models that can show this one — a display often has more than one thing to say, and the model number decides what any of it costs to put right.

About Frigidaire-built Kenmore refrigerator error code HI

Whose code this actually is

Kenmore did not write HI, because Kenmore has never built an appliance. This one is Frigidaire's, and it appears on the refrigerator that Frigidaire built and Sears sold under the Kenmore badge. Four different manufacturers built refrigerators under this badge, and several of them use an F with a number for unrelated conditions. That is the single most convincing way to reach the wrong component.

What it means

Frigidaire's own wording: HI blinking on the temperature display means the temperature in that compartment is too high.

Which Kenmore models can raise it

The Kenmore refrigerator whose model number begins 253 — the three digits before the period on the rating plate. Those digits are Frigidaire's, which is why Frigidaire's table is the one that applies to HI and no other manufacturer's does.

The other ways it may be written

The same condition is published under more than one label, because it has been carried across generations of the appliance and because a segment display draws some characters oddly: H. They are the same finding and they lead to the same place.

What happens next

  1. Check the door has been closing, and the vents inside are not blocked by a full shelf.
  2. If it does not come down within a few hours with the door shut, it is a cooling problem rather than a load.

Where this usually goes

The job this most often becomes is temperature sensor replacement, and that page carries a starting figure and the reasons that move it. A Kenmore refrigerator in this humidity hands its defrost circuit more work than it was sized for, and in a Miami kitchen a floor-level condenser blocks well ahead of any published interval. Photograph the display before you cut the power: a reset clears HI, and on a Kenmore the characters plus three digits off the plate are most of the diagnosis.

Where this meaning came from

Frigidaire's own documentation: Refrigerator Error Codes and Alarms, Frigidaire owner support. Kenmore publishes none of its own, which is why every entry on this site names the manufacturer's document instead.
