Symptom

Kenmore dryer not drying

The most useful thing we can tell you about a dryer in South Florida is that this is usually the duct rather than the dryer. Vent runs here are longer, flatter and wetter than the ones these machines were designed around, and every builder publishes a code for a blocked one.

Six ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Airflow at the outside hood

The single most valuable check on this appliance, and it is free.

  2. 02

    Water test the lint screen

Run tap water onto it. If it pools rather than passing through, it is glazed.

  3. 03

Wipe the sensor bars in the drum

Two metal strips, usually just inside the door. A cloth and a little rubbing alcohol.

  4. 04

    Try a timed cycle

If a timed cycle dries the load and an automatic one does not, the sensing is the problem rather than the heat.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “The vent is the answer more often than any part”
  • “All three builders publish a restricted-airflow code”
  • “It is free to test at the outside hood”
A torch beam on a rating plate in a dark space.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Kenmore dryer not drying

Feel for airflow at the outside hood

Start the dryer, walk outside, and hold your hand at the vent hood. You should feel real, warm airflow. If you feel almost nothing, the repair is a duct cleaning and not a part — and no component you replace will fix it while the air has nowhere to go.

What it usually means, by the company that built it

Kenmore manufactures nothing, so the same behavior points at different things depending on who made the appliance. The three digits before the period on the rating plate are what tells them apart.

  • 110 Whirlpool — AF or Check Vent, and F4 E3 on machines that use the numbered scheme. Whirlpool's own wording names a clogged lint screen or vent.
  • 796 LG — LG prints these as d8O, dGO, dGs and d7s because of how a seven-segment display draws digits — no LG document prints d80 or d95 with plain numerals. The label is DUCT BLOCK ERROR and the number is roughly how blocked it is.
  • 417 Frigidaire — Frigidaire publishes no dryer code table at all. Its own page for dryer alarms and codes exists with an empty body. On a 417 the diagnosis is by measurement rather than by a display.

Why the vent is first on this site

Because it is honestly the answer more often than any component, because it is free to check, and because it is why elements and thermal cut-offs fail early. A dryer working against a blocked duct overheats, the protection that saves it opens, and somebody replaces that part without clearing the duct. Three months later it opens again. Clearing the duct is the repair; the part is the symptom.

What the local houses do to this

Single-story houses here run their dryer ducts sideways, sometimes a long way, and humid intake air makes the lint pack down rather than blow through. That combination is why vent cleaning appears on this site as a job with its own price rather than as a line in somebody else's invoice.

Questions about Kenmore dryer not drying

It is warm but the clothes are wet.

That is the airflow story rather than the heat story. Heat with nowhere to go dries nothing.

It takes three cycles to dry a load.

Same answer, and it is worth acting on — a dryer running three times as long is also using three times the electricity.

I cleaned the lint screen and it did not help.

The screen is the first six inches of a duct that may be twenty feet long. The rest of it is where the problem usually is.
